The History of Bingo

When you first start playing bingo, you will find that it is actually a very fun and exciting game. This will lead you to have questions about how it came to be. Bingo has been around for a long time and it is a game that most everyone is familiar with. As with anything in life, bingo has its own history. The game of bingo has actually gone through quite a few changes throughout time and it has undergone a growth and development of its own. The history of bingo is an interesting one that most bingo players would like to learn a little more about.

Years ago, bingo was actually referred to as “Beano”. The game of bingo can be traced back as the year 1530. At this time it was an Italian lottery, this actual game is still played in Italy. During the 1970’s the game was introduced in France. Here it began being referred to as “Le Lotto”. It was mostly played among the wealthy men. In the 1800’s the German also played a game which was similar in a lot of ways. However, they used it as a learning tool in order to help children learn math and spelling.

It was around 1929 that the game of bingo made it to North America. This is when it became known as a game called beano. Beano was mostly seen being played as a carnival game which was played at a carnival that was located near Atlanta Georgia. The game of beano underwent a name change after a toy salesman by the name of Edwin S. Lowe thought he heard someone yell out the word “bingo”. Really, they had yelled out “Beano”. He decided to hire a math professor to help him come up with a way to increase the amount of combinations on the bingo cards. By the year 1930, he had invented over 6,000 different bingo cards.

It was a Catholic priest who approached Lowe in regards to using the game of bingo as a way to raise church funds. This was the start of bingo being played at churches. This caused bingo to become more and more popular. As more people learned of the game, more people wanted to get involved and play it as well. By the year 1934, it was estimated that approximately 10,000 bingo games were being played on a weekly basis. Today, more than 90,000,000 dollars are spent each week on bingo cards in just North America alone.

Now bingo is not only played in bingo halls, it is also played online. Online bingo halls are becoming more popular as people find that online bingo fits into their schedule much easier than going to the traditional bingo halls. Online bingo rooms are popping up in numbers and an increasing number of people are finding out about them and joining them. The game of bingo has a history and with the increasing popularity it is still seeing, it is easy to say that it has a sound future as well.
